Recently, over ten international students from the School of International and Public Affairs visited Xuhongbei Community Service Center in Xujiahui district, where they gained an immersive understanding of Shanghai and its community services. The visit marked the start of a meaningful “community study tour” that combined hands-on experience with cultural exchange.
The event began with staff introducing the center’s core functions. As a hub for serving residents and connecting resources, the center integrates administrative services, cultural activities, and everyday conveniences. The students then visited the community clinic, where they learned about primary healthcare services and were invited to sample traditional Chinese medicinal drinks, offering them a first-hand taste of how traditional medicine is woven into modern community health services.
Climbing the stairs, the students were drawn to the “Staircase Art Gallery,” which showcased paintings and handicrafts created by local residents. Each piece reflected the vibrancy of neighborhood life and cultural creativity. Staff also introduced ongoing community projects that address the diverse needs of different groups. This gave students a vivid impression of responsive and inclusive community development.
The tour concluded at the community café on the third floor, where the program leader shared insights into Xuhui’s grassroots self-governance model. He emphasized that “the central mission of a community service center is to reserve the best spaces and resources for the people, enabling residents to truly become participants and beneficiaries in community building.” His words sparked lively discussion among the students, who expressed strong interest in joining local volunteer activities, applying resident-centered governance concepts in their home countries, and even bringing family members to experience Shanghai’s warm and inclusive community life.
This visit not only provided SIPA students with a practical window into Shanghai but also fostered cultural dialogue and exchange.
